Booking a tour

Please remember that bookings are made on a first come first served basis. In order to secure your guide and date we do need to receive payment for the tour. We can not hold dates for guests without payment. If you would like to make a booking you can fill out our booking form on the ‘BOOK A TOUR / CONTACT US’ page or you can email us at bookings@hongkongprivateguide.com

Paying for a tour

Once we have received your booking request and confirmed availability we will issue you an invoice for your tour. This invoice can be paid online by credit or debit card. We will cover all of the card processing charges.

Inclusions and exclusions in the fee schedule

The costs of any transport (MTR / trams / taxis / boats and ferries etc) used during the tour are not included in the fee schedule and are payable by yourself – these costs are minimal. The costs of drinks / snacks / meals / souvenirs etc are similarly not included. The only exception to this is for the Lantau Island tour. The cost of the boat ride and Ngong Ping cable car rides are included in the price of the Lantau Island tour. The costs of taxis, buses and the MTR used during this tour are not included and are payable by yourself.

Customising your tour

When you book your tour your will tell us if there is anything that you really want to see or do, or if you have any topics of special interest. We will then design your tour around those points. If you really don’t know what to see in Hong Kong then we will give you a ‘little bit of everything’ and we will base our plan around how long you have in Hong Kong and how comfortable you are exploring on your own after our tour. If there are things that we decide you can easily do on your own without us we will focus on doing those things with you where we can add the most value.

What to wear and other general information

Your tour is a walking tour and not a car or bus tour so it is important that you wear comfortable shoes. A sturdy sneaker is recommended. It is not a bad idea to carry a small umbrella or rain coat with you, you never know when the heavens will open in Hong Kong! You will need local currency, Hong Kong dollars. Shops, restaurants, taxis etc do not take any other form of currency, including the USD. You will be able to use your credit card to pay in mid to high end shops and restaurants but all smaller, local businesses and all forms of transportation (including taxis) will only take cash. It is a very good idea to buy an Octopus card. This is a card that can be pre-loaded with local currency and used on all forms of public transport as well as in small shops for buying things like drinks, snacks etc. Once you book your tour we will send you further information on the Octopus card and where to get one from. And finally, don’t forget your camera! Hong Kong is a very photogenic city and there will be lots that you want to take pictures of.

Rescheduling and cancellations

Cancellations: If for whatever reason you want to cancel your booked tour then please note the following: – Please email us your notice to cancel and we will confirm a cancellation by email. – 50% of the tour fee is payable if you cancel your tour 5 or more days before your tour. – There are no refunds if you cancel your tour less than 5 days (119 hours) before the start of your tour. – There are no refunds if you do not turn up for the tour. Rescheduling: If you find that your travel plans change or you become ill whilst travelling and wish to reschedule your booked tour we will always do our best to accommodate your request. If we still have availability on the date that you wish to reschedule to the following rules apply: – We can reschedule a tour at no additional cost if you tell us more than 7 days before your tour is due to take place. – There will be a 50% rescheduling charge for tours that are rescheduled with 7 of fewer days notice. – Tours can not be rescheduled with less than 14 hours notice. – Rescheduling charges can be paid by credit card via invoice.

Insurance

We take out group personal accident insurance and we individually insure every person that takes part in a tour. This is included in the cost of your tour. Our insurer is Zurich. This means that we need to collect your passport information at the time of booking. If you choose to opt out of our insurance policy (by not providing your passport information) your participation in your tour is entirely at your own risk and we advise you to take out personal accident insurance before you travel.

Bad weather procedure

All tours takes place as scheduled except under Red/Black storm warning or Typhoon #8 or above. For up to date information see Hong Kong Observatory website. We often experience showers and downpours in Hong Kong, we can always work around a little bit of water 🙂

WHAT WE DON’T DO

We do not book hotels nor do we arrange transfers or flights.

We do not do tours to shopping centres, factory outlets or museums.

We do not do tours or arrange tickets for Disney, Ocean Park or Macau.  

We do not do tours in private cars – our tours are immersive and we get our guests to experience Hong Kong ‘like a local’. This means that we make use of Hong Kong’s excellent public transport system which includes the MTR (subway), buses, trams and ferries.

If you would like to visit a museum whilst in Hong Kong there are many excellent options but we encourage you to do this after your tour so as to not use up time with your guide for something you can easily do on your own.
